Another class with almost half the training time done in suwari waza. Today we worked on one of this year`s shokyu test syllabus techniques - suwari waza katate mochi nikajo osae ichi. A seemingly simple technique, however, filled with a ton of great areas to focus on. The use of the toes and ankles, the rotation of hips and placement of body weight in each and every movement from beginning to end. A new favorite!
For the upper body we went through details of the block, crossing of hands, sliding to the elbow, stable wrist, rotating, raising and cutting down part. As for the lower body, direction of the back foot, circling around, use of the knee, direction and rotation of the hip while sliding forward diagonally to cut down. Same movement in many of the techniques, today just happened to be yokomen uchi sankajo osae ichi
shomen uchi nikajo osae ichi, ni (tachi, suwari)
The main points were about making big movements, both when sliding forward and pivoting to create space.
The senior students also focused on proper use of the thumbs. Fun class!
With an upcoming orange belt test, we even had 2 kids, now on school summer holiday, join the class.
Also special guests, Murakami sensei and Mikiko sensei, along with the usual crew.
After a thorough warm up of going through 4 of the 6 basic movements, we then went into suwari waza shomen uchi ikkajo osae ichi.
A fairly simple to remember basic technique, nothing fancy to worry about when it comes to the hands, which works out perfect for focusing on the proper foot/knee work.
The techniques were katate mochi nikajo osae ichi, ni and shomen uchi sankajo osae ichi, ni.
We tried to focus on the basic points which are related in the basic movements. Turning on our toes, heels down, suriashi etc.
Next, katate mochi nikajo osae ni (standing and sitting). The focus was on the movements between the form. It`s easy to lose connection and flow when practicing basic techniques in their broken down form. Finished the class with jiyuwaza. Relaxing and trying to fit with our partner.
Complete beginners to advanced black belts. We break down one basic movement, focus on a key point, then work on that in a couple of basic techniques. The classes usually finish with a related advanced technique or similar self defence technique.
kata mochi ikkajo osae ichi(tachi, suwari) A tough technique to not get tempted to use arm power on the initial cut down and next follow through step. We focused on making distance and using the shoulder correctly throughout.
katate mochi sokumen iriminage ni Making space, then closing the space. Easier said than done.
